Tips for a safe RV trip

By Cheryl L. True

Driving an RV is always an enjoyable experience. It's like enjoying the sights at the comfort of your own "home." An RV is always exciting and better than a cramped car journey. Long, boring travels are never too long when you travel in this vehicle.

But its sheer size can sometimes give people the illusion that they don't have to drive safely. This shouldn't be the case since it is more difficult to drive an RV compared to a car or a truck. Especially when you are on the highway, take note that your motor home doesn't block smaller cars that are much more agile. Don't create trouble for other drivers on the road.

To stay safe, be aware of road and traffic rules. Here are some practical tips to consider:

Be patient. Always keep in mind that you have a bigger vehicle so drive responsibly. Remember that you're carrying your own home so take good care of it. Give due consideration to others. For worry-free travel, keep your speed down.

Plan your trip. Try to avoid interstates and highways that are particularly known for high-speed traffic. Don't drive through busy roads during rush hours.

Never drive in bad weather. Bad weather conditions are a challenge for all drivers irrespective of the type of vehicle they're driving. The challenge is even greater if you're driving a RV. Stay off the road during bad weather and wait for things to calm down.

Avoid slopes. You may think you're a good driver but don't take chances. Avoid slopes, both uphill and downhill, when driving your RV. These conditions make driving difficult and you could lose control of your RV.

Don't town vehicles. Towing a vehicle is a common practice among RV owners but this makes driving all the more difficult. You need to be doubly when you're doing this. Detach the vehicle you're towing when you need to back up your RV.

RV trips are meant to be enjoyed. Following these basic guidelines will help ensure road safety and give you a better chance of enjoying your trip..
